Sync & offline

Offline first

HomeHero keeps your inventory in a database on your device, so adding, editing, searching and browsing never wait on a server. The Android and Linux apps work fully offline. The web app needs a connection to load the page, and after that your data sits in the browser on that device. It only touches our servers if you sync.

Without an account, nothing from your inventory leaves your device, and every device (and every browser) has its own separate inventory.

That also means that without Sync, the inventory exists on one device only. Lose the phone or clear the browser's site data and it's gone. The JSON export saves item details but not photos or files, and it can't be imported back. If the inventory matters to you, use Sync, and keep copies of important receipts and photos.

What Sync adds

With a Sync or Premium subscription, every device you sign in on shows the same inventory, with a copy on our servers. That covers items, locations, item types, tags, tasks, your property, photos and files (up to 50 MB per file). You also get task reminders by email and the ability to share items and locations.

How it works

  1. Every change saves on your device first, so the app stays quick.
  2. The change joins a queue and goes up in the background when you're online.
  3. Your devices check for each other's changes regularly, and straight away when a connection comes back.

Offline, changes wait in the queue and sync when you reconnect. The sync icon in the header shows where things stand.

Turning on sync

  1. Open Settings → Account and choose Sign in for backup & sync.
  2. Make an account or sign in, and verify your email.
  3. Subscribe to Sync or Premium in Settings → Account → Subscription.

If the device already has data when you sign in, HomeHero asks what to do with it. Merge combines it with your account. Replace with Server throws away the local data and loads your account's data instead.

Conflicts

HomeHero compares changes field by field. Change an item's name on your phone and its notes on your laptop, and it keeps both. If the same field changes on two devices before they sync, the sync icon tells you there are conflicts to resolve. Tap it to see your local value and the server's side by side. Pick one per field, or use Keep All Local or Use All Server.

If you stop paying for Sync

Each device keeps its local copy and carries on as a free app. They just stop syncing with each other.
